Hard Times Ahead The prosperous times of rapid growth and thriving economy of Clearwater and other Pinellas cities in the 1920s gave way to hard times after the stock market crashed in October 1929. The Great Depression, which will be the subject of the next Chapter, brought construction to a crawl and forced into frugality the winter residents who still came to Pinellas. But even then, growth never stopped entirely. From 1920 to 1940, the population of Pinellas County jumped from 28,265 to 91,852. Part Seven: Hard Times
